This permanent road sign informs drivers that they should engage a low gear in their vehicle to assist with speed regulation on an upcoming steep hill. The supplementary sign should only be used with gradient warning signs such as 523.1 Steep hill downwards ahead and 524.1 steep hill upwards ahead.
Other signs that are frequently seen with this one include 526 and 527 supplementary signs.
